Whisky Age Statement
The whisky age statement often represented on a bottle of single malt, reflects the age of the youngest whisky that went into that particular bottle. Single malts are often a blend of more than one cask of whisky. This means that older whisky could be put in with a younger. In bottles of 15 year old whisky, the youngest whisky will be 15 years old, meaning it has been matured for five times the legal minimum. This gives it the rich depth of flavour that we all know and love.
The Making Of Scottish Whisky
The process of making a single malt whisky can be divided into five main stages. These include Malting, Mashing, Fermentation, Distillation and Maturation. From the minute the barley is collected to the beautiful moment the whisky is poured into your glass, there are centuries of heritage that go into producing a great 15 year old whisky. The process has grown in size and has been sped up by the introduction of new technologies, however many Scottish distilleries still use the traditional whisky-producing methods.
