Although the islands scattered along the Scottish coast are sparsely inhabited, a handful are home to famous whisky distilleries, producing some of the world’s most beloved single malts. The Island region is diverse, extending from the Arran and Jura distilleries in the southwest, the Talisker distillery on western Skye, and all the way around the northeast coast to the Highland Park distillery on the Orkney Island of Kirkwall. The sheer distance the region covers means that Island whisky profiles are typically varied, from notes of smoke, peat, and brine in the northern islands, to the rich, full-bodied malts and honey sweetness of the western and southern islands.
